About the Authors

David L. Nelson is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Academic Program Director for the university's Institute for Cross-College Biology Education. He earned his BS in chemistry and biology from St. Olaf College and his PhD in biochemistry at Stanford Medical School. For 43 years, he taught an intensive survey of biochemistry for advanced undergraduates alongside Michael Cox, and has received recognition for his teaching, including the Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award and the Atwood Distinguished Professorship.

Michael M. Cox was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and first encountered biochemistry through the very first edition of Lehninger's original text, an experience that helped inspire his career in the field. He completed his doctoral work at Brandeis University with William P. Jencks and postdoctoral study at Stanford with I. Robert Lehman, before joining the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983, where he became a full professor of biochemistry in 1992. His research focuses on recombinational DNA repair processes.
