About the Book

Poems & Prayers by Matthew McConaughey is a #1 New York Times bestselling collection of personal poetry and prayers from the Academy Award-winning actor and author of Greenlights, exploring faith, gratitude, and the long, winding road of chasing belief. In his collection of poems and self-described "ditties," McConaughey shows that the easy-rolling charm that made him famous is totally homegrown — writing that is about as personal as it gets, inspired by his kids, his faith, his love of ZZ Top, and the everyday moments that shape a life.

McConaughey has always relied on logic and reason to make sense of himself and the world, but he found that approach getting harder to hold onto — it's tougher these days to know what to believe in, and even harder to simply believe. That tension runs throughout the collection, as poems and lyrics blend and overlap, moving between plain speech and prayer. These aren't poems in the academic sense; they read more like confessions, prayers, and philosophical musings, often written in a rhythm that feels spoken rather than composed, exploring grace in imperfection, the uneasy dance between belief and doubt, and the idea that we never truly "arrive."

Written as a way of dealing with growing cynicism — in people, in leaders, in himself — McConaughey described his goal simply as wanting to "sell some belief." The collection has drawn mostly positive reviews for its authenticity and ability to connect with readers, alongside some criticism of the poems' craft, with reviewers describing it as a rollicking, contemplative trip that's both calming and laugh-out-loud funny.
