About the Book

Secrets and surprises from Roald Dahl! Feast your eyes on a secret! Between these covers is a long-lost chapter — and the original ending — from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, along with other delicious, never-before-seen tidbits from Mr. Wonka's factory. The centerpiece is "Spotty Powder," a wonderfully droll cut chapter from an early draft of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, in which one of the "horrid little boys and girls" originally dropped from the final story gets her comeuppance — readers also learn that these characters started as ten in total, whittled down to the five familiar troublemakers, and that the factory's little workers were first called Whipple-Scrumpets before becoming the now-famous Oompa-Loompas.

Beyond the missing chapter, the book slips into tasty tales from Roald Dahl's own life, offering readers a chance to discover more about the world's number-one storyteller. Highlights include Dahl's whimsical, nature-themed musings on the months of the year, a list of his favorite things kept beside him as he wrote, his own tips for aspiring writers, hilarious and sometimes scathing comments from his childhood school reports, and a warm tribute to his longtime illustrator and collaborator Quentin Blake, whose quirky spot art is sprinkled throughout. No Roald Dahl collection is complete without this splendiferous treat!

Reader Reception

The Missing Golden Ticket and Other Splendiferous Secrets has been embraced by young Dahl fans and collectors alike as a fun, fact-filled companion to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with reviewers highlighting the "Spotty Powder" chapter and the book's original alternate ending as particular treats — with many noting that, while entertaining, the published ending remains the stronger of the two. The collection has been praised as an eclectic, funny gathering of tidbits by and about the beloved author, offering fans a more personal, behind-the-scenes look at his writing life and creative process.
